The first major international conference to address the relationships between human activities and the environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1972. It produced a set of principles in the Stockholm Declaration, led to the founding of the United Nations Environment Programme, and was a catalyst for development of the modern environmental movement. It was followed up in 1992 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
