Procedures followed by health workers with all patients when there is a risk that any of their patients could infect them, or indirectly through them infect others with dangerous contagious diseases such as Ebola fever, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), or Marburg disease. Universal precautions include use of gown, gloves, mask, face shield or goggles, and immediate access to hand-washing facilities. All clothing, dressings, etc., that have been in contact with patients are discarded and sterilized immediately after use. Where possible, all potentially or suspected contagious patients are segregated.
