(1848–1935) London literary publisher from 1882, his company merging with Ernest Benn Ltd. in 1926. He was best known for carrying early work by such authors as Conrad, Galsworthy, and Maugham in the 1890s, when Edward Garnett acted as his principal reader (seepublishers’ readers). The firm also issued several innovative series, including the ‘Pseudonym Library’ (56 vols, 1891–1903), and the ‘First Novel Library’ from 1902.
