(1802–75), Unitarian minister at Salem, Mass., known for his investigations Salem Witchcraft (1867) and Salem Witchcraft and Cotton Mather (1869). A brother-in-law of Oliver Wendell Holmes, he is said to be the prototype of Judge Pyncheon in The House of the Seven Gables.
