Is a form of performance appraisal in which employees provide assessments of the performance of their managers. It rests on the belief that those working for managers often have a detailed knowledge and appreciation of their work behaviour and so can provide valuable feedback that will aid management development. Upward appraisal may also be used by organizations that are seeking to ‘empower’ their employees. The technique is often used alongside other forms of appraisal and may be part of a system based on 360-degree feedback.
