Quick Reference

The sociological process of a person achieving a higher socioeconomic status than earlier in life. This happens when a child of working class parents obtains professional qualifications or when a successful entrepreneur becomes wealthy. Upward mobility is often associated with improved health status compared with that of the original socioeconomic group, but the relationship is not necessarily causal. See also social mobility.
