Quick Reference

(1933–75) Scottish actress, born and trained in Glasgow. Her rather vulnerable beauty made her an effective Ophelia in Peter Brook's 1955 Hamlet with Alec Clunes and Paul Scofield. In 1956 she was again in Brook's company for The Visit with Anthony Quayle, and she made her most celebrated stage appearance as Alison in the première of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger at the Royal Court that year. Also in 1956 she appeared on Broadway opposite Vivien Leigh in Robert Helpmann's production of Duel of Angels (1960). She was first married to Osborne and later to the actor Robert Shaw.
