The liver enzyme (EC 1.7.3.3, urate oxidase) associated with peroxisomes that catalyses the oxidation of uric acid to allantoin, the final step of purine degradation in most mammals (although not primates; the human gene has nonsense codons and is nonfunctional). There are four subunits of 303 aa and one copper atom per molecule.
