A family of primitive, burrowing snakes which resemble the blind snakes (Typhlopidae) but possess an enlarged, modified scale near the tip of the tail (possibly an aid to burrowing or to anchor them in the ground). Reproduction is viviparous. There are about 45 species, occurring in India and Sri Lanka.
