The most common cause of intrauterine growth restriction, due to abnormalities in placental development and trophoblast invasion. The exact cause may be unknown or due to a number of recognizable causes, e.g. pre-eclampsia, inherited thrombophilias causing placental infarction or thrombosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
