The seventh and final book of Vālmīki's Rāmāyaṇa, which is usually thought to be a later addition to the main text. Doubts are cast on Sītā's fidelity. To maintain his honour, Rāma exiles her to the forest where she gives birth to twin sons. Later, in witness to her purity, her mother the Earth (Bhū Devī) swallows her up. Rāma abdicates, and (as Viṣṇu) ascends to heaven.
