The term for a deity's vehicle, mount, or attendant, usually an animal, such as the bull, Nandin (Śiva), or a mythical creature, such as the half-bird half-man, Garuḍa (Viṣṇu). A vāhana may have its own shrine in a temple and be the focus of associated pūjā. Vāhanas figure prominently in Purāṇic mythology.
