Quick Reference

A major annual Vaiṣṇava festival held at the Śrīraṅgam temple complex in Tamil Nadu in Pauṣa (December–January). For the ten days preceding the festival, Viṣṇu is ritually dressed as the female Mohinī. On the eleventh day (ekadaśi), the god is clothed in pearl armour, and, followed by thousands of devotees, paraded through the ‘Gate of Vaikuṇṭha’ (normally shut for the rest of the year) to take up his place at the head of his royal assembly in the great hall.
