Cuban dancer. She trained in gymnastics, beginning her ballet training, aged 9, at the Alejo Carpentier Provincial Ballet School, then at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA). In 1994 she joined the National Ballet of Cuba, aged 17, where she was promoted to principal in 1995, premier dancer in 2001, and prima ballerina (2003).

A dancer of exceptional technical skills, especially in pirouettes and adage, she has toured widely with the company and has appeared in major galas, with the Danish Royal Ballet among others. She has been most frequently partnered by Joel Carreño but also by Carlos Acosta, Jose Manuel Carreño, and Giuseppe Picone. In 2007, Valdés collaborated with British director Sebastian Doggart on the mixed-media performance Balance of Ice.
