The text itself establishes him as the original poet (ādikavi); furthermore, he takes an active part towards the end of the story, sheltering Sītā in his hermitage, where she gives birth to Rāma's twin sons, Lava and Kuśa, to whom Vālmīki himself teaches the text of the Rāmāyaṇa.
