Classified as one of the eighteen ‘great Purāṇas’ (mahāpurāṇas) in the rājasa group, i.e. those said to relate to Brahmā. An eclectic text, which, in spite of its title, and a prolonged account of the Vāmana story, contains at least as much Śaiva as Vaiṣṇava material.
