A Dutch born American Indologist, Van Buitenen was the first holder of the Bobrinskoy Chair of Sanskrit and Indic Studies at the University of Chicago. He is best remembered for his work on Rāmānuja, and as the translator into English of the first five books of the Critical Edition of the Mahābhārata.
