educated at Worcester College, Oxford, was a schoolteacher for 25 years before becoming a full‐time writer for both adults and children. His many novels range from experimental historical narratives (Pastimes of a Red Summer, 1969; Lancelot, 1978) to portraits of contemporary life, such as Landlord (1970) and Quintet (1976). Other novels include Aspects of Feeling (1986), Parsifal (1988), A Safe Conduct (1996), Hermes in Paris (2000), and Secret Protocols (2006). An autobiography, Paths from the White Horse, was published in 1985.
