A term sometimes applied to the kind of devotion (bhakti) initiated in North India by brahmin poets, sants, and teachers who subscribed at some level to the Brahmanical ideology of class (varṇa) and caste (e.g Caitanya, Vallabhācarya, Tulsīdāsa), although their followers came from all levels of society.
