An inclusive term for the principles which, according to Brahmanical dharma texts (Dharmasūtras and Dharmaśātra) should inform the entire life of each member of society, i.e. conformity to the role incumbent upon them by birth into a specific varṇa or ‘class’, in the light of their current āśrama or ‘stage of life’; in other words, compliance with their svadharma.
