King of Sri Lanka.he lost his kingdom to the Indian Tamils in 43 bce, the first year of his reign, but was later restored to the throne from 29 to 17 bce. Upon his restoration he founded the Abhayagiri monastery (an act ascribed in some sources to one of his predecessors) in the capital of Anurādhapura.which he donated to an individual monk. Such an act, the first gift of a monastery to an individual, caused a split within the ranks of the monks on the island. According to tradition, during his reign the Pāli Canon and its commentaries were committed to writing for the first time. Later generations have regarded Vaṭṭagāmaṇi as a great protector of the Buddhist religion.
