Eng. mezzo‐soprano. CG début as soloist 1955 (Shepherd Boy in Tannhäuser). Member of CG co. 1955–82, singing 780 perfs. of 60 roles. Her many roles at CG under Solti régime included Wagner. Glyndebourne 1957–69; NY Met 1968. Created the Emperor in Henze's We Come to the River (CG 1976). Successful career on concert‐platform in Verdi Requiem, Berlioz's Nuits d'Été, etc. Retired from opera 1982. Taught at RAM 1983–4. Vocal consultant ENO from 1984. CBE 1970.
