Either of the two large veins that carry deoxygenated blood into the right atrium of the heart. The precaval vein ( anterior or superior vena cava) receives blood from the head and forelimbs; the postcaval vein ( posterior or inferior vena cava) drains blood from the trunk and hindlimbs.
