A cluster of nerve cell bodies behind the ventral lateral nucleus of each thalamus, containing an inverted topographic map of the body with a disproportionate amount of space devoted to the face and especially the tongue, receiving inputs from the medial lemniscus and the trigeminal lemniscus and projecting to the somatosensory cortex. Compare ventral anterior nucleus, ventral lateral nucleus.
