Hung. soldiers' dance, used from c.1775 to attract recruits for the army. Danced, to gipsy mus., by uniformed hussars. Survived after introduction of conscription in 1849 as ceremonial dance with two or more sections, similar to those of csárdás. Used by Liszt in his Hungarian Rhapsody No.2, and by Bartók and Kodály.
