Is the largest trade union in Germany. ver.di was formed in 2001 by the merger of five unions operating in postal services, financial services, the media industry, public and transport services, and amongst white-collar workers. In 2004, ver.di had 2.5 million members, making it the largest trade union, not just in Germany but in the world. Its creation marks a significant step away from the principle of industrial unionism (see industrial union) in Germany towards general unionism (see general union). [See also union structure.]
