The red margin of the upper and lower lip that extends from the exterior edge of the intra-oral labial mucosa to the extra-oral junction of the lips with surrounding facial skin. It is a thinly keratinized layer of stratified squamous epithelium deeply penetrated by well-vascularized dermal papillae which impart the typical red appearance of the lips. It is frequently the site of herpetic lesions.
