International agreement on the treatment of human remains (full title: The Vermillion Accord on Human Remains) adopted by the World Archaeological Congress in 1989 at its inter‐congress meeting in South Dakota, USA. The six items in the accord specify respect for mortal remains of the dead; respect for the wishes of the dead where known or reasonably inferred; respect for the wishes of local communities, relatives, or guardians; respect for the scientific value of human remains; the need for negotiated agreements on the disposition of human remains; and the recognition of concerns held by various ethnic groups.
