Quick Reference

(1913–1993), British author and illustrator. Verney's first book, Friday's Tunnel (1959), begins the related novels about struggling writer Gus Callendar and his unusually named six children. Family interaction is set against a plot centering around saving the rural landscape. Subsequent adventures include a direct sequel, February's Road (1961), and some more loosely linked titles, Seven Sunflower Seeds (1968) and Samson's Hoard (1973). Verney is a witty and elliptical writer who captures family life in light brushstrokes. His illustrations are reminiscent of Edward's Ardizonne's, having a similar comic feel.
