The cloth or kerchief with which St Veronica wiped the face of Christ on His way to Calvary and upon which His features miraculously appeared. In the Middle Ages the name Veronica was thought to derive from vera icon, ‘true image’. The subject of St Veronica holding the vernicle (or sudarium) was very popular in art from the 15th to 17th centuries.
