Quick Reference

A large chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (large fibroblast glycoprotein, chondroitin sulphate core protein, 264 kDa) that interacts with hyaluronan to form large supramolecular complexes in hyaline cartilage. The core protein of the longest isoform is 3396 aa. Versican is also involved in cell signalling and some versican isoforms have been implicated in migration and proliferation of cancer cells. Decorin and biglycan are other soft tissue proteoglycans. In Wagner's syndrome, an autosomal dominant vitreoretinopathy, there is a mutation at the 3′ acceptor splice site of intron 7.
