The grouping of children of various ages, usually in primary education, for the purposes of, for example, project work. This is also known as ‘family grouping’. Where vertical grouping is a standard arrangement, the pupil will remain with the same teacher throughout their time at the school, rather than moving ‘up’ a class at the beginning of each year.
