The combination of two or more companies at different stages in the value chain. For example, a manufacturer might purchase one of its suppliers or an organization involved in distributing its products. Vertical disintegration is said to occur when a business withdraws from a stage in the value chain, usually because it decides that it would be cheaper to pay another company to carry out these activities.
