Ultramontane French journalist. In 1843 he became editor of L'Univers, a newspaper which gained an international significance through his defence of the Church. In his original stand for the freedom of Catholic teaching he was widely supported by French Catholics; much less so when he defended the temporal power of the Papacy and advocated Papal infallibility.
