A method of testing the hardness of a material by using a diamond indenter that produces a square indent on almost any metallic material. It is indicative of the resistance to wear and scratching. The Vickers hardness number (VHN) is a function of the test force divided by the surface area of the indent. See also brinell hardness test; knoop hardness test.
