Quick Reference

The Roman equivalent of Nike. She is associated in cult with Jupiter (Victor), oftener with Mars. She was worshipped by the army, as was natural. Her temple on the Clivus Victoriae leading up to the Palatine dates from 294 bc; from 204 it housed temporarily the sacred stone of her future neighbour, the Magna Mater (see cybele). In 193 Porcius Cato 1 added a shrine to her temple; in the early Principate both sanctuaries celebrated their anniversary on 1 August, no doubt because of Octavian's victory in Alexandria in 30 bc; see augustus.
