One of the two main centres within the confederacy of Vajjī having its capital at Mithilā. The territory was bordered by the Ganges, on the other side of which was the state of Magadha. Videha was a prosperous trading centre and merchants came from Śrāvastī andVārāṇasī.and possibly also as far away as Gandhāra.by means of the Uttarāpatha or northern trade route. In the Buddha's day Videha was a republic, although earlier it had been ruled by kings.
