Son of King Pasenadi of Kosala. After his father's death.Viḍūḍabha set out with a large army to attack the Śākya clan, that to which the Buddha belonged. This was to avenge an insult to his father on an earlier occasion when the Śākyans had sent a low-class woman to be his bride. On three occasions the Buddha stood in the way of the army and Viḍūḍabha retreated. On the fourth the Buddha realized the fate of his people was sealed and made no attempt to prevent the ensuing slaughter.
