Ballet in one act with choreography by Balanchine, music by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, and Richard Strauss, sets by Ter-Arutunian, and costumes by Karinska. Premiered 15 Jun. 1977 (gala preview) and 23 Jun. 1977 by New York City Ballet, at the State Theater, New York, with von Aroldingen and Lavery, McBride and Tomasson, Leland and Cook, Mazzo and Martins, Farrell and Donn. A suite of waltzes inspired by nostalgia for 19th-century Vienna, the ballet is set to Tales from the Vienna Woods, Voices of Spring, Explosion Polka, Gold and Silver Waltz, and the waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier. The sets move from the Vienna Woods to an art nouveau café and a mirrored ballroom.
