(Rossini: La gazza ladra). Bass. A soldier. Father of Ninetta. After a fight with his commander, he is sentenced to death. He escapes and, disguised as tramp, visits his daughter. He asks her to sell a silver fork and spoon to raise money for him—they belong to him and have his initials on them. His daughter is accused of stealing the cutlery and sent for trial. Fernando risks his life to help her but is himself arrested. When the true ‘thief’ is discovered, his daughter is freed and Fernando receives a royal pardon. Created (1817) by Filippo Galli.
