A seven-stringed bamboo lute, with a gourd or gourds attached at each end to enable the instrument to resonate. In some form, the vīṇā is said to have great antiquity; in iconography it is used to symbolize mastery of music and the arts. Sarasvatī (2) is often depicted playing the vīṇā.
