Cond. début Geneva 1979, with wind ens. which he founded. 1st prize in Gino Marinuzzi Cond. Comp. 1982 launched his career. Prin. cond. Turin Opera 1986–9; mus. dir. Lucerne Opera 1987–91; gen. mus. dir. Bremen 1990–3; mus. dir. Saarbrücken Radio SO 1991–5. Début Vienna PO 1997. Worked mainly in opera, at all major int. opera houses, but from 1998 was mus. dir. Munich Radio Orch. (disbanded 2006) and directed Paradisi Gloria, series of concerts of 20th-cent. choral mus. Début NY Met 2000 (Madama Butterfly). Mus. dir. La Fenice, Venice, from 2002.
