A protein (virus inhibitory protein endoplasmic reticulum-associated interferon-inducible, 361 aa) that is induced in response to interferon, lipopolysaccharide, double-stranded RNA (poly(I-C) or Sendai virus. Infection with cytomegalovirus causes redistribution of induced viperin from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi and then to cytoplasmic vacuoles containing viral proteins.
