Quick Reference

A tragedy by Massinger and Dekker, printed 1622. It is based on the story of St Dorothea, who, with her lover Antoninus, is martyred for her faith during the reign of Diocletian, after converting the daughters of the zealous persecutor Theophilus: Theophilus is also converted in the last act, and is himself tortured to death. The same story has been treated in poems by Swinburne and G. M. Hopkins.
