Founded by George Virtue in the early 1820s, the firm was taken over in 1855 by his son James. Long the proprietor of the Art Journal, in 1867 he founded the short-lived Saint Paul's Magazine, edited by Trollope. In 1872, he became part-owner of the house of Strahan.
