That part of the axial skeleton which includes the gill arches and their derivatives. Developing during (and characterizing) the late pharangula stage of embryogenesis, the visceral skeleton becomes the splanchnocranium, giving rise to gill arches in teleosts and in higher vertebrates remaining cartilagenous as the larynx and trachea.
