A retrovirus of sheep and goats, one of the Lentivirinae and related to HIV. It was first recognized in Iceland as the cause of two diseases in sheep: maedi, a pulmonary infection, and visna, a neurological infection that causes a paralysis similar to multiple sclerosis.
