(thiamine, aneurine) a vitamin of the B complex that is active in the form of thiamine pyrophosphate, a coenzyme in decarboxylation reactions in carbohydrate metabolism. A deficiency of vitamin B1 leads to beriberi. Good sources of the vitamin are cereals, beans, meat, potatoes, and nuts. The recommended daily intake is 1 mg for an adult.
