A battle fought between the French and the British near the Basque city of Vitoria, during the Peninsular War. Wellington decisively defeated the French under Joseph Bonaparte and Jourdan. News of this victory inspired Austria, Russia, and Prussia to renew their plans to attack France and they declared war on Napoleon on 13 August.
