(1864–1938), English-born lexicographer and editor, came to the U.S. (1891), and is best known for his editorship of Funk and Wagnalls's New Standard Dictionary and various reference books, and as a contributor to the Literary Digest. He wrote some 20 books pertaining to the English language and other philological subjects, and was a popular authority in sanctioning American colloquialisms.
